Adoption is a beautiful, transformative journey — one filled with emotion, complexity, and courage. As someone who has walked this path, I’ve learned how much small gestures of love, support and thoughtful gifts for adoptive families can mean. Not just in the early days, but throughout the years.
If you’re here because someone in your life has recently adopted or is in the process, thank you. Your presence matters more than you know. Whether it’s for an adoption shower, a celebration hearing, their first Christmas together, or simply to say, “We’re thinking of you,” this guide is for you. Here are the gifts that truly touched our hearts and why they mattered.
Celebrating the Bonds That Adoptive Families Make
“We Made a Wish and You Came True” Adoption Keepsake Book
This beautiful keepsake allows families to document their journey from matching to everyday life. It’s become a place for us to store photos, notes, and moments that don’t always fit into traditional baby books.
Custom Family Illustrations
Illustrations representing the new family can be incredibly meaningful. One of our favourite gifts was an image of three pairs of boots labelled “Mummy,” “Daddy,” and our daughter’s name. It was simple but spoke volumes. These keepsakes honour the unique way each family comes together.
Personalised Children’s Books Featuring Their Name
We received a book where our daughter’s name and likeness were woven into the story. For adopted children, these books offer recognition, comfort, and representation.
Adoption-Specific Books for Children
Books addressing themes of belonging and love help children feel seen. Our toddler’s favourites include:
- The Family Fairies by Rosemary Lucas
- The Blanket Bears by Samuel Langley-Swain
- Delly Duck: Why A Little Chick Couldn’t Stay With His Birth Mother by Holly Marlow
Adoption Milestone Cards or Journals
Celebrate unique moments like matching panel, adoption order, first family holiday, or “I love you” with milestone cards or journals that help parents mark these special steps in their family’s story. This can be a lovely gift early on in the process, to mark and celebrate the whole journey.
Supporting the Transition Period
Meal Delivery or Food Vouchers
The post-placement period can be overwhelming, with routines still forming and attachment growing. Food vouchers were one of the most helpful gifts we received. We batch-cooked before placement, but having these meant one less thing to worry about.
Sensory Gifts & Regulation Tools
Weighted blankets, sensory toys, soft lighting, or noise-cancelling headphones can help children regulate emotions and feel safe. (Always check with the parents first — sensory needs vary.)
Memberships to Local Attractions
Zoo, museum, or soft play memberships provide low-pressure opportunities for memory-making and bonding. Planning outings can be exhausting after placement, and these memberships were lifesavers for us.
For the Adoptive Parent(s)
Family Photoshoot Voucher
We were gifted a photoshoot a few weeks after placement. Those photos became our first official family Christmas pictures and still mean the world to us.
Anything Featuring ‘Mummy,’ ‘Daddy,’ or Preferred Titles
Many adoptive parents wait years to be called “mum” or “dad” (or their preferred terms). Small items bearing these titles mean so much.
Books on Trauma-Informed Parenting
Parenting adopted children often requires a different perspective. These books were especially helpful:
- The Connected Child by Karyn Purvis
- The A-Z of Therapeutic Parenting
- No Matter What by Sally Donovan
I have written top 10 adoption books for all stages of the process, if you are interested in the books we found truly helpful.

Self-Care Hampers or Items
Think candles, bath salts, tea, and fuzzy socks — gifts encouraging parents to take a breath, even if just for five minutes.
Gifts That Offer Emotional Support
A Thoughtful Card or Letter
A handwritten note that says, “I see you. I’m here. I’m proud of you,” can be a powerful gift, especially a few months in when the initial attention fades.
Audiobook or Meditation App Subscriptions
Resources like Calm, Headspace, or Audible can support parents through long nights or give children tools for rest. I’ve meditated daily for years, it’s changed my life and helped me stay grounded.
Other Thoughtful Ideas
- Scrapbook & Disposable Camera for Celebration Hearing (if applicable)
A quiet, creative way to remember the day. - Memory Box
For letters, drawings, and small mementoes. - Donation in Their Name
Supporting organisations like PAC-UK, Adoption UK, or We Are Family lifts the whole community. - Toniebox
Story players that give kids independence and comfort, a great screen-time alternative. We didn’t get this one as a gift, but it quickly became a favourite for our daughter.
What Not to Give (Gently, Respectfully)
Even the kindest intentions can miss the mark. Avoid:
- Anything implying biological ties are “realer” (e.g., books using “real parents” language)
- Gifts that invite intrusive questions disguised as curiosity
- Parenting advice books that aren’t trauma-informed
Instead, centre empathy and presence. That’s always enough.

Why These Gifts Matter More Than You Think
Gifts don’t need to be big. They just need to say: “We see you. We honour the family you’re building.” Adoptive families might not fit the traditional mould, but our love runs just as deep. Our beginnings are different, but our futures are full of hope.
Whether it’s a personalised book, a quiet card, or a casserole dropped on the doorstep, your thoughtfulness becomes part of that story. So thank you for being here.
